Tileño mezcal was born in 2014 with the hope of celebrating the history and tradition of the Zapotec people, which is rich in nuances and symbols that feature a community faithful to its culture.
Tileño is the name of the people from Zapotec community of San Martín Tilcajete, birthplace and home to our founder, José Ángeles Elias and his parents. 1 hour south of Oaxaca City, and named for the patron saint of the town San Martin Obispo y Tilcajete, it comes from Zapotec and means "place of dyes."
Families in our community are known for the crafting of alebrijes, which are picturesque figures carved and decorated by hand from a tree called "copal."
The dyes made for the alebrijes are based on natural elements and inspire the colors of each of our labels. The combination of all our products and their colorful labels represents the art of the Zapotec people.
